Lifestyle Choices vs. Genetics

Although we may not always think about it, lifestyle choices are quickly reflected in our unique inner biology and determine whether or not we enjoy healthy aging. And although genetics gives us the possibility of certain conditions, it is ultimately environmental influences that directly affect genetic expression.

Though specific cancer genes have been identified, it is unique biology that determines whether or not cancer develops. Even though all cancer is genetic, just a small portion—perhaps 5 or 10 percent, is inherited. Most cancers come from random mutations that develop in body cells during one's lifetime, either as a mistake when cells are going through cell division or in response to injuries from environmental agents such as radiation or chemicals.
